Ear Check for Ear Infections

Professional, friendly ear examinations for all ages. We assess symptoms, inspect the ear using an otoscope, and advise on treatment or referral where needed.
Simple, fast assessments for common ear problems.

About Service

At our ear check service we use a handheld otoscope to look inside the ear canal and at the eardrum to identify signs of infection, inflammation or wax build-up. The pharmacist or clinician will ask about symptoms such as pain, discharge, hearing change, or fever, then explain findings and suggest appropriate actions — from self-care advice and ear drops to onward referral for GP or urgent care if needed. We prioritise clear explanations so you understand treatment options and expected recovery timelines.

Key Points

Our ear check focuses on identifying whether symptoms are due to a bacterial or viral infection, wax impaction, or other causes like swimmer's ear. After examination, we offer tailored advice covering pain relief, appropriate topical treatments, and whether antibiotics or GP review are required. We also cover prevention measures such as ear drying, avoiding cotton buds, and when to seek urgent care. Clear documentation and communication help patients feel confident about their next steps and recovery expectations.

Common Signs of Ear Infection

Common signs of ear infection include ear pain, reduced hearing, fluid or pus draining from the ear, fever, and irritability in children. Not every ear problem is an infection — wax or eczema can cause similar symptoms — which is why visual inspection is important. We explain expected timelines and home care measures such as using appropriate analgesics, keeping the ear dry, and avoiding inserting objects into the ear canal. When symptoms persist beyond a few days or worsen, arrange a follow-up so we can reassess and consider further treatment.

FAQ Section

If you have any other concerns about ear health, ask our team during your visit or call for guidance. We prioritise safe, evidence-based advice and will refer patients to GPs or urgent services when appropriate.
Do I need an appointment?
No appointment is usually required; we welcome walk-ins. Call ahead if you want a specific time.
Can you prescribe antibiotics?
Pharmacists can advise and supply some treatments; if antibiotics are needed we will recommend GP review or urgent care referral.
Is the check painful?
The inspection is quick and generally not painful. If the ear is very tender we will be gentle and stop if needed.
What about children and babies?
We provide child-friendly checks and clear guidance for carers. Young children may be unsettled but checks are brief and safe.
When should I seek urgent help?
Seek urgent care for severe pain, high fever, sudden hearing loss, or if symptoms rapidly worsen despite advice.
